October Journal: New York Weekend Guide
Welcome to our October Journal! This month, we’re bringing you our NY Weekend Guide, fall edition. At least once a year we spend time visiting friends in the city and ultimately, take in all the inspiration that NY has to offer. We’ve just gotten back from our second trip this year and have documented our favorite neighborhoods to stroll through, where we ate, and where we shopped. Lastly, a trip to NY in the fall is not complete without a day spent upstate, leaf peeping and apple cider drinking. Bookmark this entry to revisit when planning your next trip!
In the City
Over the years, we’ve grown fond of certain neighborhoods within the city and always come back to these when visiting. We love nothing more than wandering aimlessly past beautiful brownstones on the Upper East Side, grabbing a coffee and lunch at Ralph’s or Maman, and taking a stroll through Central Park. In fall you can see the autumnal leaves changing against the architecture and it sets our heart on fire. Nothing feels more quintessential NY than this.
If you enjoy shopping, we recommend you head downtown towards SoHo and NoLita for more boutique stores with the most alluring storefronts. Some of our favorite clothing stores were Sézane, Dôen, Toteme, Khaite, and Jenni Kayne. On the home front, Aesop is our chosen apothecary, RW Guild has some of our favorite tableware in SoHo, and deVOL Kitchens has the most drool worthy showroom, sure to make you consider a renovation.
To round out our ideal day, we would then head to the West Village for a glass of wine at Café Kitsuné, followed by dinner at Café Cluny, Palma, or Suprema Provisions. Carbone is our all-time favorite if you can manage to snag a reservation. After dinner, we recommend a nightcap at Bar Pisellino. If you want recommendations on where to go out at night, we’re not your source as after a full day out in the city, we will surely be in bed by 11:00 pm.
Upstate NY
A visit to NY in the fall is not complete without a day spent upstate, leaf peeping and apple cider drinking. Hudson Valley will always have our heart, as it’s where we got married just a few summers ago at Windrift Hall (also on Airbnb). You can rent a car or take the train up into Hudson, but getting around will certainly be easier by car. Once you arrive, we recommend visiting a farm or orchard to stock up on local produce, ciders, and jams. We visited Dressel Farms, but there are so many within this area. You may try but you cannot pass up the apple cider donuts, as their warm cinnamon scent is irresistible.
Our next stop, and our new favorite place, is the Inness Hotel in Accord. We made a lunch reservation in advance but spent time before and after our reservation in their shop, walking the grounds, and taking in the views of fall foliage overlooking their golf course. Inness is set in the most idyllic landscape and feels very private from the surrounding area. The hotel and restaurant is a designer’s dream with an abundance of natural light and honest materials, an open kitchen concept, antique and vintage furnishings, and surrounding views out to their grounds. We cannot fail to mention that the food was very enjoyable and freshly made.
Until next time…
